INFORMATION NOTE-AMBULANCE SERVICE

18 December 2018 – INFORMATION NOTE

MALAYSIAN RED CRESCENT’S RESPONSE TO WHATSAPP VIRAL MESSAGE ON FREE AMBULANCE SERVICE

It has been brought to the attention of the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) recently that a message has been circulating on WhatsApp that the Society provides “Free Ambulance 24hr”.  The message has since gone viral and we have had a number of calls enquiring about the service provided.

The MRCS clarifies that it did not issue any kind of statement through its official communique, website or social media platforms offering free ambulance service.  It further reiterates that not all ambulance calls are free.  Free emergency ambulance service offered by the Society operated round the clock is strictly for emergency calls, received through the 999 emergency hotline registered through the Malaysian Emergency Response Service or MERS 999, managed by the Emergency Medical Coordination Centre.  Upon receipt of an emergency call, the MRCS Emergency Service Officer (ESO) will dispatch an ambulance with two certified first responders to the scene of an emergency, be it road or home accident in nature or in any medical emergency situation requiring urgent professional medical care. This service is provided free of charge to the general public only in Klang Valley.

The MRCS also responds to non-emergency transfer cases calling in directly to the Society’s dedicated telephone lines for hospital to hospital, hospital to home or home to hospital transfers whereby an ambulance will be dispatched based on appointments and subject to availability of ambulance during the time of call. Additionally, the MRCS also caters for ambulance standby duties for sporting events and gatherings.  However, the non-emergency service is NOT free and is chargeable.  The following service numbers are provided as guidance for specific ambulance needs:

  • MRCS 24hour Emergency Ambulance Service (for emergency cases) – 999
  • MRCS Ambulance Service (for non-emergency transfer cases) – +603-2143 8227
  • MRCS Ambulance Standby Service (for standby duties)  –  +603-2145 3242
