Cargill Malaysia contributed RM100, 000 to the Malaysian Red Crescent to support the victims of the recent cyclone in Myanmar Cyclone Nargis and the earthquake in China. The Myanmar Cyclone Nargis and the China – Sichuan Earthquake Fund will each receive RM50, 000.

The Deputy National Chairman of the Malaysian Red Crescent, Hisham Harun Hashim received cheques from the Director of Corporate Affairs, R. Venugopal, on 12 June 2008. The money was raised by the various Cargill businesses and over 550 employees in Malaysia in six locations across the country.

"The response from the businesses and the employees was overwhelming," said Doris Yap, Secretary of the Cargill Cares Council, an employee-led community involvement committee which coordinated the fund-raising. "We are deeply saddened by what happened in China and Myanmar. We hope our contribution can go some way in providing basic amenities for the victims in this difficult period."

Meanwhile, Maj. Gen Dato Hj Megat Mohd Yusof B Dato Hj Megat Mahmud, The Secretary General of The Malaysian Red Crescent in thanking Cargill for its contribution RM100,000 said ‘The aid rendered by Cargill and its employees would serve to support MRCS’ mission in the protection and preservation of life after the catastrophies. MRCS is already actively working with its counterparts in China and Myanmar to ensure that the aid reaches the victims.

The Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) had its beginnings in 1948, and was formally authorized by statute under the Malaysian Red Cross Society (Incorporation) Act, 1965. MRC is mandated by the Government of Malaysia to carry out humanitarian and relief activities, whether in peace or war times. As an auxiliary to the government, the body is committed to being in the frontlines to dispense aid, when ever or where ever distress may occur. MRC is a member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and is therefore a beneficiary of the Federation’s vast network of resources efforts, and is duty-bound to channel such monies towards activities that will eventually benefit the public and those in need.
